Save on your fare with LIFE

The Low-Income Fare is Easy (LIFE) program provides transportation assistance to low-income individuals in Los Angeles County. LIFE offers fare subsidies that may be applied toward the purchase of Metro or any LIFE participating transit agencies or free regional ride options. Reduced fared TAP cards are also eligible for additional savings with LIFE. Once enrolled, LIFE benefits can be loaded onto your TAP card at any participating vendor.

Eligibility guidelines

Adult riders, Senior/Disabled, K-12 grade students and full time College/Vocational students are eligible if their incomes are:

2 $45,050 or less
3 $50,700 or less
4 $56,300 or less
5 $60,850 or less
6 $65,350 or less

Individuals under the age of 18 whose parents qualify are automatically eligible to receive LIFE subsidies.

Individuals who receive transportation subsidies from the city/county schools, employers or are ACCESS or U-Pass card holders are not eligible to participate in the LIFE program.

Step 2: Contact to enroll

Be sure to have all the following items to provide to your agency:

  • Government-issued picture ID
  • Proof of income (check-stub, Medi-Cal, EBT, Social Security Award or tax return)
  • Valid TAP card
  • Email address or phone number

Step 3: Load LIFE subsidy

Please allow 24 hours after enrollment for activation.

Once enrolled, load LIFE subsidies on your TAP card by:

  • visiting any TAP vendor
  • purchasing online at taptogo.net, or
  • purchasing by phone at 866.TAPTOGO (866.827.8646).

Enrollment is valid for 12 months and subsidies are available at the start of each month.

Use your LIFE subsidies towards the purchase of a Metro 7-Day, 30-Day Pass or a 20-Regional Ride option valid on any one of the participating transit agencies.


To load LIFE subsidies on your TAP card you can visit any TAP vendor, purchase online at taptogo.net or purchase by phone at 866.TAPTOGO (866.827.8646).

Q: How long does it take for the LIFE subsidy to be activated after I have enrolled?

A: The LIFE database takes 24 hours after you have enrolled to activate the discount in the system.

Q: How can I find the nearest TAP vendor?

Q: What are the pass options each month and when do they become available?

Q: Can unused rides from 20-ride option be rolled over to the following month?

A: Yes, unused rides may be rolled over to the following month. But the TAP card is limited to 8 of the same products (20-ride option is considered a product) including the one currently in use.

Q: May I apply LIFE subsidies to more than one TAP card?

A: No, LIFE subsidies can only be applied to one card per patron. Each family member of a household must have their own TAP card.

Q: Can I load my LIFE subsidy at a TAP vending machine (TVM)?

A: No, LIFE subsidies are not recognized on a TAP vending machine (TVM).

Q: If I have additional questions or am not receiving my discounts, who should I contact?

Q: If I have reduced fare TAP card (Senior/Disabled, College/Vocational and Student K-12), am I also eligible to receive LIFE subsidies?

A: Yes, you must enroll in LIFE using your permanent Reduced Fare TAP card to receive the discount.

Q: What do I do if my TAP card is lost/stolen, expired, damaged or other?
